Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the women. Bone metastases are found approximately 65% of advanced breast cancer patients. Bisphosphonates are used in the breast cancer patients with bone metastases for palliation of pain and prevention of skeletal complications. Many studies indicate that progression of bone metastases are prevented by bisphosphonates. Mechanism of action, types and efficacy of bisphosphonates are reviewed here. More potent and new bisphosphonates may replace the old ones in the future.
