In this prospective clinical trial we evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of chemoradiotherapy 25 medically inoperabl (or refusing surgery) patients with locally advanced eusophageal cancer. They were given 50 Gy external radiotherapy in 25 fractions over 5 weeks, plus concomittant cisplatin intravenously on the first day of weeks 1, 5, 8, 11, and 5-fluorouracil, 1 g/m2 per day by continuous infusion on the first 4 days of weeks 1, 5, 8, and 11. The overall median survival was 8 months. One year and 2-year overall survival rates were 48% and 31%, respectively. The treatment was moderately tolerated, and treatment-related death was not observed.
